ERNIE COLÓN PASSES AWAY AT 88

On a more sombre note now, folks, after a celebrated career working in comic books as an artist and editor for over sixty years, Ernie Colón has passed away at the age of 88. Confirmed in a post on Colón's official Facebook page, the Puerto Rican comic creator passed away yesterday after battling cancer for over a year.

Among the highlights of his long and storied career, Colón co-created DC Comics fan-favourite character Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld, and Marvel Comics' Damage Control.

R.I.P. and thank you, sir.

Born on July 13, 1931, Colón began his career working as a letterer for Harvey Comics, while providing uncredited artwork as a penciler and inker for titles including Casper the Friendly Ghost and Richie Rich. After drawing Gold Key Comics' Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom in 1969, Colón would spend much of the '70s working on Warren Publishing titles including Vampirella and its horror anthology magazines Creepy and Eerie.

STAGNANT DIGITAL SALES CAUSE DC TO REINVENT THEIR STRATEGY

The gangs all here.

As DC expands its digital footprint via its DC Universe subscription service, sales are falling flat for the publisher in one area: its own comics.

DC co-publisher Jim Lee noted in an interview during Comic-Con International: San Diego that digital comic sales haven't grown like the publisher had hoped. ‘On the digital side, I think it's been pretty flat in recent years,’ Lee said. ‘Which is a little disheartening.’

Lee acknowledged subscriptions to the publisher's DC Universe platform were on the rise, but noted the impact on digital sales. ‘A lot is moving to subscription, and that is having a downward pressure on transactional sales,’ Lee noted. ‘But I think it's discouraging in general because everyone talks about digital being the future.’

In addition to streaming services, subscribers to the DC Universe platform have access to a library of over 20,000 digital comics, according to the publisher's website. That site is separate from the publisher's DC comics site, where digital comics are available for purchase.
